Golden Pin Design Award 2018 Final Selection Jury Comments
Kashiwa Sato (Creative Director at SAMURAI Inc.) says the Finalists’ exceptional designs left him feeling internationalized. When judging, he pays attention to whether the design clearly conveys its underlying concept, and whether the concept addresses a problem. Ad van Berlo (Founder of VanBerlo) agrees that design’s role is to solve real problems. His advice to designers with international ambitions is to look beyond products, and think holistically about designing an ecosystem around their clients.
Chris Lee (Founder and Creative Director of Asylum) appreciates design that achieves maximum impact from minimal intervention. He feels that many of the Finalists’ found a wonderful balance between the design and the message that it delivers. Similarly, Edmond Bakos (Managing Director at CHAMPALIMAUD Design) is impressed by the technical execution. Beyond technical ability, his advice to designers who want to win over international consumers is to ground their design in the culture of the target market.

Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2018 Final Selection Jury Comments
Chris Lee (Founder and Creative Director of Asylum) favors audacious ideas over design concepts that are already well-executed. He encourages future entrants to show their ambition and think big. Edmond Bakos (Managing Director at CHAMPALIMAUD Design) felt that the Final Selection was an excellent opportunity to meet the designers behind the concepts. He encourages future entrants to be proud of what they have achieved in reaching the Final Selection, and demonstrate their confidence to the jury.
David Wang (Founder of bo design corp.) recommends that design concepts should be developed step-by-step. He warns that design concepts can easily go off track and become overcomplicated. Ad van Berlo (Founder of VanBerlo) encourages future entrants to do research and get insights. Furthermore, he thinks entrants should speak to their target market and get testimonials from real consumers, which will prove the feasibility of their design concept in the marketplace.
