Taipei, TAIWAN — The call for entries is now open for the 2022 Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award, and the names of several international jurors have been revealed. The Golden Pin Design Award is for commercialized products that are already available on the market or completed projects. Entries will be accepted until July 7 (Thursday), and those who register before May 31 (Tuesday) can enjoy an early bird discount. The Golden Pin Concept Design Award is for innovative concepts and hands out a total of NT$1.2 million in prize money. Registration will remain open until June 22 (Wednesday). The Golden Pin Design Award was established in 1981. It is Taiwan’s oldest and most prolific professional design competition. In 2014, it began accepting international submissions for the first time. Every year, famous companies and design studios from Taiwan and abroad submit entries. Past entrants that competed for prizes, certification, and glory include Casio Computer Co., Ltd., HP Inc., Carl Zeiss AG, Formwerkz Architects (Singapore), Creative Crews (Thailand), ASUSTeK Computer Inc., BenQ Corporation, Aaron Nieh Workshop (Taiwan), Grass Jelly Studio (Taiwan), Xiaomi, TCL, etc.

The Golden Pin Design Award Ceremony is one of the most iconic annual event across the Asian design industry.

As entries have become more international and diverse over the years, the Golden Pin Design Award invites design experts from various fields from across the globe to form a jury and provide an international perspective. Past jurors include many world-renowned design professionals, such as British industrial design masters Tom Dixon and Martin Darbyshire; Huaren interior designer Tony Chi; Mecanoo founder Francine Houben; and Japanese designers Naoto Fukasawa, Oki Sato, Kashiwa Sato, Taku Satoh, and Fumie Shibata.

This year, the organizer invited German furniture design master Werner Aisslinger to serve on the jury for the final selection of both awards. He is known for innovatively using materials and applying experimental and artistic methods to create unique furniture. His works can be found in the collections of numerous world-class museums including MoMA. Aisslinger has also crossed into the field of architecture with LoftCube, a modular mobile living space that is a solution to modern urban living issues. LoftCube is one of his representative works.

The final selection jury also includes famous Japanese graphic designer Yoshiaki Irobe. He was responsible for the visual system design of Yayoi Kusama Museum, and won the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, Japan’s most prestigious graphic design award, for his corporate identity plan for Osaka Metro. Irobe is highly regarded in his industry.

Other international jurors announced today include Finnish designer Renne Angelvuo and Australian designer Danny Venlet, who frequently serves as a juror for international design awards such as the Red Dot Design Award; and famous Singaporean designer Yah-Leng Yu, who is active in Asia’s design and creativity fields. They will bring their respective expertise, plentiful selection experience, and perspectives to the secondary selection. The full list of jurors will be announced shortly.

Registration for the 2022 Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award is now open. Due to the global pandemic, this year’s preliminary selection, secondary selection, and final selection will all be conducted online, and no physical entries will need to be delivered. The competition categories for both awards are product design, communication design, spatial design, and integration design.

The Golden Pin Design Award is aimed at products that are already commercialized on the market and spaces/integrated design projects that are already in use. It provides certification for excellent designs, and also separately awards the “Special Annual Award” to recognize outstanding works with exemplary social or industrial significance in “circular design” or “social design.” Entrants must be business entities or design teams. An early bird discount will be offered up to May 31.

The Golden Pin Concept Design Award is aimed at works that are not yet manufactured or sold on the market and ideas that have not yet been realized. The award’s values are innovation and creativity. Entrants may be students, designers, or companies, and they may enter individually or as a group. To encourage young designers to be boldly innovative, there is no entry fee. The winners of the Best of Golden Pin Concept Design Award will receive a cash prize of NT$400,000 to support the realization of the concept design, helping entrants turn concepts into reality.
