Best Design winners revealed — Golden Pin Design Award 2017 Grand Ceremony
Who are the best designers of the huaren world?

Tonight, the Best Design winners were announced at the Golden Pin Design Award 2017 Grand Ceremony, in the spectacular Eslite Spectrum Performance Hall, inside Taipei’s historic Songshan Cultural & Creative Park. The 2017 Grand Ceremony featured immersive, interactive art installations by Bito. The iconic Golden Pin trophy was reimagined as a kinetic sculpture at the entrance to the theatre, spinning on a fixed axis.
Keng-Ming Liu, Director of Bito (Taiwan’s leading motion design studio), returned as Ceremony Director for a second year. His vision for the 2017 Grand Ceremony, “Hui” (Convergence), places Taiwan at the meeting point of designers from all over the world; connecting designers with the huaren community. The premiere of Bito’s Golden Pin Design Award 2017 Opening Film stunned the audience at the ceremony with its abstract, evocative visuals, and deeply affective soundscape. The motion design studio has built a reputation for shattering paradigms in filmmaking, and this was no exception.
Taiwanese television celebrity, Mickey Huang (黃子佼) returned to host the Grand Ceremony for a second year, having hosted the Golden Horse, Golden Bell, and Golden Melody Awards. His humor and personality took centerstage at the ceremony, and he modeled clothes from this year’s costume sponsor — Wisdom. Taiwanese motion visual art group, Tripper showcased a live 3D laser projection performance during the ceremony’s halftime interlude. Two video DJs simultaneously projected live images and audio based on the concept “sketch”, resulting in moments of harmony and conflict.
Golden Pin Design Award 2017 Best Design winners
In total, there are 23 Best Design winners in this year’s Golden Pin Design Award — 16 from Taiwan, 3 from Japan, 2 from China, 1 from Hong Kong, and 1 from Germany. The Product design category yielded 10 Best Design winners, 1 from Packaging design, 7 from Visual Communication design, and 5 from Spatial design.
Jury Chair — Kazuo Tanaka laid out his impression of this year’s entries at the final selection in October. He thinks the Golden Pin Design Award, in its 37th year, is attracting very diverse entries. He advocates the value of creativity and concept over aesthetics and beauty. “The overall performance of this year’s entrants is very good,” says Tanaka. “Many projects have innovative ideas that are relative to the issues in people’s everyday life, and trends in design.”

Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2017 Best Design winners
In total, there are just three Best Design winners in this year’s Golden Pin Concept Design Award, who don’t just win a trophy, but also NT$300,000 (about US$9,500) to help bring their concepts into reality. Social impact design projects are a trend amongst the winners, tackling issues such as healthcare and sanitation.
Jury Chair — Reflecting on the Golden Pin Concept Design Award Final Selection, Jury Chair Kazuo Tanaka points to the ethics behind design as a main factor in whether a concept is practical or not. “Design that addresses social concern is a big trend in the industry,” says Tanaka. “As designers, we are always trying to improve on the current situation.”

37 Years of the Golden Pin Design Award — Year upon year, the Golden Pin attracts the best design talent from all over the world. Studios from Asia, Europe, and America, all enter the competition to make their name in the world’s largest market. The Best Design winners are supported with the award’s accreditation and prestige; a seal of approval from the huaren design community.
About the Golden Pin Design Award Group
The annual Golden Pin Design Award is the longest-running international design award that celebrates products or projects expressly created for and within huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities, offering entrants an unprecedented opportunity to prove their prowess in the world’s largest market.
The Golden Pin Award Group is comprised of two international awards — the Golden Pin Design Award, the Golden Pin Concept Design Award — and the Young Pin Design Award for students in Taiwan. The Golden Pin Design Award Group is executed by the Taiwan Design Center and organized by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Ministry of Economic Affairs acts in an advisory capacity.
