Taipei, TAIWAN — This June, the Golden Pin Design Award’s annual Design Perspectives x Golden Pin Salon series heads to Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, and Macau. Seven celebrated designers from Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Macau will speak at the events; sharing their design philosophies and experience from their illustrious careers. The speakers include Gina Hsu, Johnny Chiu, Keng-Ming Liu, Yao-Pang Wang, Andrew Wong, Huat Lim, and Au Chon Hin.

These three events mark the 29th, 30th, and 31st editions of the Design Perspectives x Golden Pin Salon series, which has taken place annually since 2015. The Salon series has previously toured Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, 18 cities across China including Shanghai, and the surrounding region including Hong Kong and Taipei. To date, the Salon has invited nearly 90 of Asia’s most celebrated design professionals onto its stage.

Taipei
The first event takes place in Taipei on June 6 at Not Just Library in Songyan Court, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Beginning from 2.30pm, architect and interior designer Johnny Chiu gives a talk on ‘Designing in Asia: the Thrill of the Fast and the Cheap’, followed by industrial designer Gina Hsu’s talk entitled ‘Design Ferments: Exploration, Journey of Hospital, factory, stationery store’, and Taiwan-based graphic designer Andrew Wong’s talk about ‘Ambiguous Storytelling with Design’. The event ends at 5pm and guests are welcome to stay and further explore Songyan Court, which encompasses Not Just Library, Taiwan Design Museum, and the Design Pin store.

Founder of J.C. Architecture, Johnny Chiu shares his experience working all over Asia. He has studios in New York and Taipei, and throughout his career he has lived, worked, and taught in a total of six different countries. Founder of Dong Hai Hospital Design Studio, Gina Hsu specializes in industrial design, but recently she has also been actively collaborating with local craftspeople and curating cultural events. This year, Hsu curated the Tea 3.1415 Craft exhibition at 2019 Creative Expo Taiwan, and she constantly explores new avenues of Taiwanese design. Founder of Onion Design Associates, Andrew Wong grew up in Hong Kong, but discovered his passion for typography while studying graphic design at the University of Houston. His work has received numerous accolades including a nomination for Best Recording Package at the 57th Grammy Awards in 2015.


Kuala Lumpur
The Kuala Lumpur salon takes place on June 11 at PAM Centre. Beginning from 7pm, Malaysian designers Huat Lim and Susanne Zeidler discuss cultural attitudes and aspirations in ‘Ethos : A journey of sustenance’, followed by pioneering motion designer Keng-Ming Liu’s talk entitled ‘We create motion. We design experience.’, and Taiwanese curator Yao-Pang Wang’s talk on ‘Body knowledge / Reimagining field experience – on site’. Hosted by Taiwan Design Center and the Golden Pin Design Award, and executed by Malaysian graphic design agency TSUBAKI STUDIO, the event ends at 9pm.

Managing Director of ZLG Design, Huat Lim graduated from the AA School of Architecture in London, and worked under Zaha Hadid as well as Ron Herron before joining ZLG Design in 1992. Lim’s past projects alongside Susanne Zeidler who is Partner at ZLG Design, include Asia Broadcast Centre, NTV Studios, and Singapore National Library, and he is also active in education. Founder of Bito, Keng-Ming Liu was executive art director of the Golden Pin Design Award from 2016 to 2018, and his opening video for the Golden Pin Design Award 2016 Grand Ceremony won the Bronze Cube at the 96th ADC Award. Liu began his career in New York and continues working with global brands like FREITAG and Mercedes Benz from his studio in Taipei. His studio crafts emotional, immersive experiences through his own style of animation and motion design. Director of InFormat Design Curating / InFormat Paper, Yao-Pang Wang specializes in curating branded exhibitions and cultural spaces. In the past three years, Wang has curated several spaces at Creative Expo Taiwan, as well as branded exhibitions for Starbucks, IKEA, GQ, ELLE, and SAMSUNG in Taiwan. His studio has also won numerous accolades at the Golden Pin Design Award, including 2018 Best Design for TAIWAN HIP HOP KIDS.


Macau
Finally, the Macau salon takes place on June 15 at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Center. Beginning from 2.30pm, Macanese graphic designer Au Chon Hin gives a talk entitled ‘Influence social design’. Creative Director of UNTITLED MACAO, 29 year old Au only emerged on the design scene in 2013, and over the past six years he has rapidly built a reputation for designing bold and eye-catching visual identities for cultural festivals such as Macao Design Week 2018. Internationally acclaimed, Au has won awards all around the globe, from the Golden Pin Design Award to the German iF Design Award and New York’s ADC Award. Au’s talk is followed by talks from Keng-Ming Liu and Gina Hsu, who both readdress the same respective topics from their talks in Taipei and Kuala Lumpur. Hosted by Taiwan Design Center and the Golden Pin Design Award, and co-organized by Macau Fair & Trade Association, the event ends at 5pm.
