Taipei, TAIWAN — The Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award highlight 12 exciting entries to promote the awards’ 2019 Call for Entries, which will close in late-June. So far, the two awards have received entries from companies and designers in eighteen different countries and regions. The Golden Pin Concept Design Award features concepts to change the world for the better, meanwhile the Golden Pin Design Award features global brands including Starbucks and GQ Taiwan.


Golden Pin Design Award 2019

The Call for Entries deadline is June 27, and the entry fee is just USD$70 with no additional charges. The award is a golden opportunity for companies, design teams, and individuals from all around the globe to demonstrate design excellence in Taiwan, Asia, and beyond. So far, companies in fourteen countries and regions have entered the award, including Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, South Korea, Japan, USA, Canada, Germany, Slovenia, and Israel. This is the first time ever that the award has received entries from Brunei, Slovenia, and Israel.

Client: Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA)

Developed as a fundraising idea for a non-profit cat rescue program in Vancouver, KATBOX is modular playhouse designed for kittens. The DIY kit is composed of square pieces, made from biodegradable and recyclable materials, which can be assembled into all kinds of fun structures.

Name: Starbucks x ÄiÄi Coffee Grounds Charity Candles

Client: Äi Äi ILLUM LAB

To celebrate Earth Day and Starbucks Taiwan’s 20th Anniversary, Starbucks partnered with candlemaker ÄiÄi Illum Lab. Together, they created two candles made from processed coffee grounds. Hillz Design was enlisted to design the packaging, which features the Earth and the Taiwanese aboriginal star of hope.

GQ Taiwan collaborated with Scottish whisky brand Glenfiddich and three award-winning mixologists on a campaign to promote cocktail bars in Taiwan. HOUTH designed the labels with portraits of the mixologists, and bottles were made from recycled glass by Spring Pool Glass.

Name: The Living Lab, Traditional Clan Estate

HAO Design aimed to retain the original spirit of this old Sanheyuan, while at the same time adding more contemporary elements to its interior. They broke down partitions between the rooms, creating a more open plan living area, and added windows that connect the interior with the central courtyard.


Dika Kindergarten Design Center_Lollipop ideal garden

Name: Lollipop ideal garden

Client: Mengzi Hongshi Enterprise

This monolithic, lollipop-shaped building is located in the southwestern Yunnan province of China. It is colored in a bright pink gradient, bringing warmth to its concrete walls, and stimulating the kindergarten students’ imaginations. The designers were inspired by children’s drawings and ideas of utopia.

Name: Taichung World Flora Expo, Discovery Pavilion

Client: Education Bureau, Taichung City Government

Themed on ecology in the western Taiwanese city of Taichung, this exhibit was designed for the Discovery Pavilion at Taichung World Flora Expo. It tells a narrative of the city’s Dajia River, all the way from the mountains to the river estuary, and advocates that half of the Earth should be preserved for wildlife.


Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2019

The Call for Entries deadline is June 20, the award is free to enter, and this year’s prize fund is TWD$1,200,000 (approx. USD$39,000). The award is a platform for emerging designers to showcase their talent, competing for the prize money that will help bring their concepts into reality. So far, designers in thirteen different countries and regions have entered the award, including Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, USA, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Russia.

Name: Life-Saving Net

Life-Saving Net is a safety solution for swimming pools. This simple rescue apparatus combines a mechanical roller with a voice sensor and fluorescent net. When the sensor receives a call for help, the roller will immediately retract the net, and lift the struggling swimmer out of harms way.

River Cleaner is a floating waste collector driven by the force of nature. The river current pushes the turbine blade and drives the conveyor belt, collecting waste that floats on the water’s surface. Every element is designed to minimize energy usage and purify the environment.

Name: Pingo – Solo traveling system

Pingo reimagines the way we navigate while walking. It is a compass with a digital display, which only indicates the distance to-, general direction of-, and name of the destination. The needle always points towards the destination, offering a sense of security while encouraging the user to define their own path.

Name: án-ne-kóng

án-ne-kóng is a series of illustrated books that teach the basics of Taiwanese Hokkien language. The colours, fonts, and style of illustration all communicate a sense of modernity, which removes Taiwanese Hokkien language from its common association with the traditional.

Name: Arctic Saver Tower

The concept of Arctic Saver Tower is to prolong the winter season in Antarctica, allowing more time for polar bears to migrate across the icy landscape. It is activated in April as the ice begins to thaw, actively freezing sea water in critical locations, and offering a foothold for polar bears to continue their migration.

Nowadays, it is common for people to express themselves through social media, and this has lead to divergence in our perception of ‘real’ feelings. EMO triangulates biometric data gathered from wearable sensors, against data gathered from social media feeds, and represents the divergence in a physical form.

The annual Golden Pin Design Award is the longest-running international design award that celebrates products or projects expressly created for and within huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities, offering entrants an unprecedented opportunity to prove their prowess in the world’s largest market.

The Golden Pin Design Award Group is comprised of two international awards — the Golden Pin Design Award, the Golden Pin Concept Design Award — and the Young Pin Design Award for students in Taiwan. The Golden Pin Design Award Group is executed by the Taiwan Design Center and organized by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Ministry of Economic Affairs acts in an advisory capacity.
