We are always proud to say: “We are from Malaysia!” Malaysia is so unique because of our multi-racial, diverse society. As Malaysians, we live in unity with other races on the same land. All races have their own languages, dialects and cultures. Despite living together, we manage to retain our own culture from our ancestors. As a designer, how much do you know about your own roots? We are huaren. The word huaren simply means “Chinese people”. It also represents Chinese-oriented design and art works, and the designers behind them. It is unique for us the Chinese, and something that’s close to us. This issue, we explore designers’ thoughts about huaren design, and what makes a design huaren.
