Golden Pin Design Award & Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2018 Completes Secondary Selection Judging in China
For a fifth year, the Golden Pin Design Award has completed the Secondary Selection judging in China, and as for the Golden Pin Concept Design Award, this is the third year that Second Selection judging has successfully taken place in Shanghai. The Secondary Selection juries have awarded the 2018 Design Mark to 328 entrants from China; 316 entrants in the Golden Pin Design Award, and 12 entrants in the Golden Pin Concept Design Award.
Taiwan Design Center partnered with three organizations – Shenzhen Industrial Design Profession Association, Hebei Industrial Design Innovation Center, and Shanghai Creative Industry Center – to organize the Golden Pin Design Award 2018 Secondary Selection judging events. Additionally, Taiwan Design Center partnered with Shanghai Creative Industry Center for a third year to organize the Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2018 Secondary Selection judging event.

Several jury members travelled from Taiwan to China, and joined the local judges at Secondary Selection events in all three cities. The jury members from Taiwan include Grace Wang (President of QUE SERA SERA), Lin Pin-Si, Roger (Chief Advisor at Nova Design), Johnny Chiu (Founder of J.C. Architecture), and Chan Wing Kei(Creative Director of Leslie Chan Design Co.,Ltd.). In Shenzhen, the local jury members were Enya (General Manager of Tencent), and HANJIAYING (Founder of HAN JAIYING DESIGN & ASSOCIATES). In Shijiazhuang, the local jury members included Xiaohui Xi (ECD, Cac110 Design Co., LTD Beijing), and Yichao Li (President of LKK Innovation Design Group). In Shanghai, the local jury members were Jody Xiong (Founder & Creative Director of The Nine), and Yang Wenqing (Founder of LOE DESIGN). The jury lineup brings together professionals from various design sectors to give comprehensive advice based on each of their specialisms.

Compared with last year, the biggest change to the judging format is the division of jury members into categories according to their specialisms. In the past, the jury members reviewed all entrants from all categories regardless of their specialisms. The advantage of the new judging format is that jury members bring their own specialist knowledge and experience to judging their corresponding category. This year there were a total of 977 entries from China in the Secondary Selection, and 316 passed through to the Final Selection, winning the 2018 Design Mark. Those 316 Mark winners will participate in the final judging event in Taipei in September for the prestigious 2018 Best Design award.
Of the entries from China, the judges say that smart technologies are incorporated in a lot of products, and while quality varies from entrant to entrant, the standard of this year’s entrants is generally very high. Although the judges were initially impressed by the extravagant design on display, on closer inspection they found many details that needed to be refined. The judging event in Shanghai presented the most diversity and the highest quality. They found the entrants from Shenzhen to be more commercial, meanwhile, the Spatial Design entries from Shijiazhuang were exceptional. The jury members are amazed by the level of Spatial Design work in northern China. The judges’ main concern is about attention to detail. They feel that the entrants sometimes try to bring too many features together in one design, which results in a lack coordination.
The jury praised and affirmed the Book Design entries in the Communication Design category. They also proposed that integration design, as well as furniture design, show immense potential for future years. They recommend that designers can stand out by considering human interaction, and by human-centred-centered approach to design. Another trend they anticipate for the future of the Golden Pin Design Award is design focused on environmental and social impact. Entrants are advised to consider the perspectives of consumers in order to optimize their design in terms of content and experience, rather than simply catering to their clients’ demands.
GOLDEN PIN CONCEPT DESIGN AWARD 2018 SECONDARY SELECTION IN CHINA
The Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2018 Secondary Selection judging event took place in Shanghai, on August 11. The jury members included Lin Pin-Si, Roger (Chief Advisor at Nova Design), Johnny Chiu (Founder of J.C. Architecture), Chan Wing Kei (Creative Director of Leslie Chan Design Co.,Ltd.), Grace Wang (President of QUE SERA SERA), Hongjie Ruan (Creative Director of C_Futures), and FAN SHIZHONG (Chairman & Creative Director of Hunan Fanshizhong Industrial Design Co., Ltd.).
This year, a total of 107 entrants from China participated in the Secondary Selection. Among them, 71 entries were submitted for judging. Finally, 12 entries passed to the Final Selection, winning the prestigious 2018 Design Mark. Those 12 entrants will compete with designers from all around the globe for the prestigious 2018 Best Design and NT$400,000 cash prize.
The jury members all agree that entries in the Product Design category are the most impressive. They feel that entries in the Spatial Design, Visual Communication Design, and Packaging Design categories generally lack innovation. Compared with the Golden Pin Design Award, the Golden Pin Concept Design Award is mostly concerned with discovering problems and presenting solutions by means of design. This requires designers to complete their own design concepts in a creative, implementable, low-cost, novel, and smart manner. This demands careful, consistent observation, and consideration of environmental impact, as well as new interactive relationships. The Golden Pin Concept Design Award celebrates design that both reflects and guides the future of humanity,
heralding new possibilities for the future through innovative design concepts.
